Santa Claus came to Lauderhill Family Care Assisted Living Dec. 8 bearing
the gift of mobility. More than 100 residents received new shoes.
The gifts were from the Elder Services Resource Network, an organization
made up of professionals who work with seniors and the mentally ill
throughout Broward County. The group provides opportunities for members to
network and perform philanthropic acts.
"We all
want to help seniors, along with helping our businesses grow," said Sharon
Cofar, whose business, A Move Made Easy, is based in Coral Springs.
Every year, the all-volunteer group chooses a themed gift for
residents at a nursing or assisted living facility. Each member chooses a
resident (or residents) during one of the group's monthly meetings.
This year, the group chose to give shoes to seniors at Lauderhill
Family Care Assisted Living. Some givers presented recipients with
additional gifts, such as toiletries and home products.
Along with
presenting gifts, members also sang holiday songs and entertained the
residents.
Gloria Ego, family services and outreach
coordinator for The Law Offices of Alice Reiter Feld in Tamarac, said ESRN members look
forward to bringing cheer to seniors during the holidays. "There are so
many who do not have families and might not receive anything this holiday
season," she said. The organization's gifts, Ego said, help members "pay
it forward in a way [that they] might not have thought they could help."
ESRN has 150 members and has been providing services throughout
the county for 17 years. The organization conducts additional gatherings
throughout the year, including health fairs and expos, a clothing/sundries
drive and other community events. Members are also involved in other
organizations that serve the senior community.
Myrna Wolf, owner
of the Plantation-based caregiver service Compassionate Companions, said
ESRN helps keep her connected to seniors and those who work with them. "It
gives me an opportunity to be involved in all aspects of the elder
community with all kinds of people in similar fields," she said. "It's a
great connection to our clients."
ESRN members are already looking
ahead to 2010. Upcoming events include the annual health fair and the
sundries collection. There's also a new initiative under way: the ESRN
singers. Members will visit facilities throughout the year, singing songs
to seniors.
"Many seniors have no outside contact," Cofar said. The
singers, she explained, will aim to "brighten their day and make them
smile."
ESRN meets at 8 am every fourth Wednesday of the month at
Covenant Village, 9201 W. Broward Blvd. in Plantation. For more
information, contact Sharon Cofar at 954-609-4577.

The Law Offices of
Alice Reiter Feld strives to help the senior community.
Whether a client is looking to plan long-term care for a
loved one or for financial planning for the family, the
board certified firm uses its 27 years of expertise to take
what Feld calls 'a holistic approach' to their clients'
needs.
"We want our clients to be able to protect
their assets and leave a legacy for their family, which is a
primary goal for most seniors," Feld said.
The staff
of seven uses a team approach when meeting with a client and
preparing his or her case. Although each case is delegated
to a specific individual, they meet on a weekly basis to
discuss cases.
"We don't just service clients like
vacuums, so they don't feel like they're just filling out
documents," Feld said.
When you make a phone call to
the law firm, you will more than likely be speaking to legal
assistant Debbie Wenger, or Gloria Ego, the family services
and outreach coordinator.
"We spend time talking
through their concerns, their goals and problems," Wenger
said.
Wenger assists Feld with clients, understanding
and creating a plan that meets their needs and goals. Ego
then takes over in setting up and assuring that plans for a
client are followed through.
"I advocate 100 percent
for our clients. If it means a call to an association, those
are the things I do," Ego said. "I have a lot of surrogate
parents; I am their surrogate daughter."
"No other
lawyer has a Gloria, someone that fills the gap. I don't
know how we could service our clients without her," Feld
said.
The group also specializes in the areas of life
care planning, Medicaid planning, asset protection,
veteran's benefits, wills and trusts, probate, trusts and
trust administration, health care surrogates and living
wills, incapacity representation, powers of attorney and
special needs trusts.
Feld, a former Lauderhill
commissioner, began advocating for the elder community after
clients would inquire about relevant issues such as
veteran's benefits and assets. Unfamiliar with the up and
coming field, she turned to mentors; decades later, she has
passed what she learned to other lawyers.
Feld takes
her skills a step further with workshops in Tamarac and
throughout South Florida; they assist individuals looking
for guidance on elder care and planning.
"We want to
educate the public on why they need to prepare and
understand elder care issues. There's a tremendous amount of
misinformation out there, especially on veteran's benefits
and Medicare," Feld said. "The sooner you plan, the more
options you have and the better the outcome."
The
next workshop, "Are You Caring for an Aging Parent?" will
take place at the Tamarac location at 10:30 a.m. July 25.
